Gadolinium is a clear, non-radioactive chemical compoundused with patients undergoing magnetic resonance imaging that has been linkedto the potentially fatal disease Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis.
In 1988, the United States Food and Drug Administrationapproved gadolinium as a contrast agent to provide a clearer picture of organsand tissues during MRIs. However, more than 200 cases of Nephrogenic SytemicFibrosis have been linked to gadolinium since that time.
Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis is a disease that was firstrecognized in 1997. The debilitating and potentially fatal disease causesdiscoloration and thickening of the skin and connective tissues of the body. The disease can inhibit movements, and the tightening of the tissue can be soextreme as to result in broken bones.
In 2007, the FDA issued a black box warning forgadolinium-based contrast agents. The warning outlines the risk of developingNephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis, particularly in patients with severe kidneydisease.
