A certain type of gadolinium-based contrast agent may besafe for patients at high risk for kidney injury, according to a new study.
Researchers at Emory University School of Medicine inAtlanta presented the results of a small retrospective study in poster formatat the Society for Critical Care Medicine 2011. According to the study, 116intensive care unit patients at high risk for kidney injury who underwent MRIwith a gadolinium-based contrast agent suffered no decline in renal function ornephrogenic systemic fibrosis.
The patients observed in the study were administered a formof gadolinium which confers a low risk for nephrogenic systemic fibrosis, gadobenate dimeglumine – also known as Multihance.
“Finding methods of imaging with non-iodinated contrast isimportant for this population,” said Nicole Harlan, lead investigator in thestudy. “This is a good start to learn more about the renal safety ofgadolinium.”
