Two studies released this week attempt to explain the link between gadolinium-based MRI contrast agents and Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis.
According to two studies conducted by researchers at the Jefferson Institute of Molecular Medicine of Thomas Jefferson University, gadolinium-based contrast agents cause a change in the activation of chemicals and proteins that regulate a person's immune system. The studies also examined the relationship between NSF and patients with renal disease.
According to the studies, gadolinium is excreted from the body through the kidneys, but in patients with renal insufficiency the gadolinium remains in the system longer than it should. This prolonged exposure to gadolinium can result in the development of NSF, a potentially fatal disease with no effective treatment. Patients who develop NSF experience decreased mobility and often require a wheelchair or walker.
