Following the adoption of restrictive guidelines for gadolinium-basedcontrast agents at a Massachusetts Hospital, no new cases of nephrogenicsystemic fibrosis have been identified.
Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston adopted restrictiveguidelines for limiting the maximum dose of gadolinium-based contrast agents in2007 and a report published early this month examined the cases of NSF beforeand after the new protocols. As we reported on May 5, the protocols showedpotential for limiting new cases of NSF. Since that time, further examinationof patient records has shown that the new guidelines may be more important thanpreviously thought.
No new cases of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis have beenreported since the study was published earlier this month. Dr. Yingbing Wang, one of the study’s authors, said their findings could lead to a new standardfor administering gadolinium-based contrast agents across the county.
