NSF and Brand Name Gadolinium-Based Contrast Agents

by Administrator 23. June 2011 07:33

The use of gadolinium-based contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging scans has recently been linked to the debilitating skin tissue disorder nephrogenic systemic fibrosis.

Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis is a rare, and potentially fatal, disorder affecting the skin and internal organs. The disorder causes a hardening of the skin and other tissue. In it’s most severe form, nephrogenic systemic fibrosis can cause the appearance of plaques and fibrotic nodules on the lungs, heart and liver.

The first cases of NSF were identified in 1997, but the United States Food and Drug Administration did not acknowledge the link between gadolinium-based contrast agents and the disease until recently. Most all of the gadolinium-based contrast agents on the market have been conclusively linked to the development of NSF, including:

-          Omniscan

-          OptiMARK

-          Magnevist

-          ProHance

-          MultiHance

If you have developed nephrogenic systemic fibrosis after being administered a gadolinium-based contrast agent, please contact a gadolinium injury attorney of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187.
