The number of MRI procedures performed in the United States has increased by three percent every year since 2003.
According to a recent survey of American hospitals, more than 30.2 million MRI procedures were performed in 2010. That number represents an increase in MRI procedures of approximately three percent per year since 2003. The annual growth rate for MRI procedures between 1999 and 2003 was approximately 15 percent per year.
Recently, the United States Food and Drug Administration issued a warning for MRI contrast agents containing gadolinium. Gadolinium-based MRI contrast agents have been linked to the rare, and potentially fatal, skin disorder Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis.
