MRI powers robotic pill through body

by Administrator 12. January 2012 04:55

A new robotic pill has been developed that will be powered by the magnetic forces of an MRI. The ultimate responsibility of this pill will be to manuever through the intestines and detect early signs of cancer in a patient.

This pill was created by researchers from Tel Aviv University as well as Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston. There is a tail connected to the end of the pill that measures 20 mm x 5 mm in size. This tail is made of copper and helps move the pill through the intestines. This robotic pill will be solely powered by the magnetic fields of an MRI.

This creation has the potential to save numerous lives, once it is out of the research stage. Doctors would be able to control the pill externally, which could prove extremely beneficial for determining areas of concern in a patient.

The contrast agent, gadolinium, is commonly used in patients who undergo an MRI scan. This agent has recently been linked to severe side effects. If you developed a side effect due to the use of gadolinium, please contact the gadolinium lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187 today.
