Lantheus Medical Imaging, Inc., a leader in diagnostic medical imaging, commended the United States Food and Drug Administration addition of a black box warning on all gadolinium-based contrast agents.
Lantheus released a statement supporting the FDA's attempt to highlight the rare, and potentially fatal, condition known as nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. The condition has been linked to gadolinium-based MRI contrast agents, specifically when administered to patients with kidney disease.
"We support the FDA for taking action to ensure the safe and appropriate use of gadolinium-based contrast agents," said Mrak Hibberd, M.D., Ph.D., senior medical director for Lantheus. "We agree with the changes put forth by the FDA. . . The revised language provides clearer guidance to healthcare professionals about the risk of gadolinium-based contrast agent-associated NSF in patients who are renally impaired."
