Gadolinium may be Dangerous to Patients with Rental Failure

by Administrator 19. September 2007 09:09

Patients with renal failure are at an increased risk of developing NSF/NFD if they receive large amounts of Gadolinium-based contrast agents during an MRA.  Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis/Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NSF/NFD) is a rare, potentially life-threatening condition with no known cure.

Last year Medscape sited a study by the Danish Medicines Agency regarding this issue.  The agency has learned of 25 NSF/NFD cases in both Danish and Austrian patients who developed the condition within two weeks to three months of receiving a gadolinium injection for the MRA test.  The cases were reported by Danish Medicines Agency on May 29, 2006.

Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis/Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NSF/NFD) has no known treatment.  According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on December 22, 2006, improved renal function (spontaneous or via kidney transplant) appears to slow down or arrest its development and may even yield a gradual reversal of the condition.

If you have any of the conditions associated with Gadolinium’s serious side effects, you should contact a Gadolinium attorney at Williams Kherkher immediately for a free consultation either by clicking on the link provided or by calling toll-free (866) 950-9000.  We can discuss your situation and chart the best course of action.
