FDA Boosts Warnings on Gadolinium-Based MRI Contrast Agents

by Administrator 10. September 2010 06:34
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Thursday that certain types of drugs used in MRI scans shouldn't be used in patients with kidney disease because of the risk of developing a rare and potentially fatal skin condition.

The FDA said that MRI contrast agents that are gadolinium-based will carry new warnings on their labels about the risk of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis if the drug is administered to patients with kidney disease. The drugs are also used in a procedure known as magnetic resonance angiography, or MRA.

The agency also named three specific drugs that should be avoided in patients with kidney disease: Covidien PLC's Optimark, Bayer AG's Magnevist and General Electric Co.'s Omniscan. There are seven gadolinium based contrast agents on the market.

If you have developed NSF because of gadolinium-based agents, you may be eligible for compensation. Contact a gadolinium attorney of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187.
