The contrast agent, gadolinium, is commonly used in MRI scans but there are several factors that should be considered before the use of this agent.
If you have issues with your kidneys, the use of gadolinium can have severe consequences. Gadolinium is usually removed fairly quickly after an MRI scan in people with healthy, functioning kidneys. People with kidney conditions may have a much harder time removing the agent and serious side effects could be a direct result. Make sure your doctor is fully aware of your health issues before any contrast agent is used in your scan.
The prolonged exposure to gadolinium can cause the development of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. This condition causes extreme discomfort including; hardening of skin, inflexible joints and skin darkening. NSF is very difficult to treat and a permanent treatment has yet to be discovered.
