Study shows that women are not getting breast cancer MRIs

by Administrator 1. February 2012 06:28

Several reports throughout the years as well as the American Cancer Society have recommended that women who are at a high risk for breast cancer undergo an MRI once a year, in addition to their mammogram.

A recent study has shown that most women are not following through with that advice and are not receiving the MRI scans. It is unclear if doctors are not relaying the right information to their patients regarding these scans or if the women are blatantly ignoring their advice. What is known is the women who have an elevated risk of developing breast cancer are not utilizing the MRI scans as they should be.

According to the American Cancer Society, these scans are used to detect early signs of breast cancer and can have the ability to promote a better chance for recovery and survival of the disease.

The contrast agent, gadolinium, is commonly used in MRI scans and can have serious side effects if not removed from your body properly. Please contact the gadolinium lawyers of Williams Kherkher at 800-761-3187 if you or someone you know has developed a severe side effect after undergoing an MRI with the gadolinium agent.

Concerns with gadolinium

by Administrator 25. January 2012 06:11

The contrast agent, gadolinium, is commonly used in MRI scans but there are several factors that should be considered before the use of this agent.

If you have issues with your kidneys, the use of gadolinium can have severe consequences. Gadolinium is usually removed fairly quickly after an MRI scan in people with healthy, functioning kidneys. People with kidney conditions may have a much harder time removing the agent and serious side effects could be a direct result. Make sure your doctor is fully aware of your health issues before any contrast agent is used in your scan.

The prolonged exposure to gadolinium can cause the development of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. This condition causes extreme discomfort including; hardening of skin, inflexible joints and skin darkening. NSF is very difficult to treat and a permanent treatment has yet to be discovered.

Please contact the gadolinium lawyers of Williams Kherkher at 800-761-3187, if you or someone you know has developed a serious side effect after the use of the contrast agent, gadolinium.

Teenagers with kidney disease attend prom

by Administrator 18. January 2012 06:04

In Los Angeles, California each year a special prom takes place for teenagers suffering from kidney disease. This prom happens in Sherman Oaks and is called the "Renal Teen Prom."

This year there were more than 400 students who took part in the special night. Celebrities often attend the event and actor Jack Black was present this year, as he has been many years in the past. Black dressed up as a king and entertained the teenagers throughout the night. He was also crowned prom king for the evening.

The people attending the prom all have varying complications with their kidneys. For some of the teenagers present, they were just diagnosed with complications and for others, they have been on dialysis for numerous years. The Renal Support Network sponsors this event, which is in it's 13th year.

People suffering from kidney disease have a much harder time flushing out the contrast agent, gadolinium, from their bodies after undergoing an MRI. Prolonged exposure to gadolinium could cause severe complications. If you have developed a side effect due to the use of gadolinium, please contact the gadolinium lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187 today.

MRI powers robotic pill through body

by Administrator 12. January 2012 04:55

A new robotic pill has been developed that will be powered by the magnetic forces of an MRI. The ultimate responsibility of this pill will be to manuever through the intestines and detect early signs of cancer in a patient.

This pill was created by researchers from Tel Aviv University as well as Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston. There is a tail connected to the end of the pill that measures 20 mm x 5 mm in size. This tail is made of copper and helps move the pill through the intestines. This robotic pill will be solely powered by the magnetic fields of an MRI.

This creation has the potential to save numerous lives, once it is out of the research stage. Doctors would be able to control the pill externally, which could prove extremely beneficial for determining areas of concern in a patient.

The contrast agent, gadolinium, is commonly used in patients who undergo an MRI scan. This agent has recently been linked to severe side effects. If you developed a side effect due to the use of gadolinium, please contact the gadolinium lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187 today.

Kidney disease more common in African Americans

by Administrator 5. January 2012 05:33

The National Kidney Foundation has released information regarding chronic kidney disease. The data indicates that there are approximately 26 million people living in the United States who suffer from chronic kidney disease.

This condition can cause severe complications including; nerve damage and high blood pressure. People who have diabetes are more susceptible to developing kidney disease. The information also shows that African Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans are more likely to suffer from this disease.

Recently, celebrity Nick Cannon was hospitalized over the holidays due to mild kidney failure. George Lopez and Tracy Morgan are also two well-known celebrities who have had to undergo kidney transplant surgery due to their failing kidneys.

People with kidney problems can develop severe side effects from the use of the contrast agent, gadolinium. This agent is used during MRI scans and may not be properly disposed of in individuals with kidney disease. If you have partaken in an MRI and developed a side effect relating to the contrast agent, gadolinium, please contact the gadolinium lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187 today.

New MRI contrast agent in development

by Administrator 29. December 2011 08:05

Engineers at the University of Pennsylvania have found a way to place a protective coat around iron-based contrast agents used in MRIs in order to reduce negative side effects associated with these agents.

The coating would allow the contrast agent to interact only with areas containing tumors. The current contrast agents have coating that is sugar-based so as to be able to leave the body fairly easily, but these agents cannot stick to particular tissues. This new coating development of iron-based agents could allow for the agents to attach to diseased areas for easier detection of tumors.

The engineers' research shows that the more malignant a certain tumor is, the more acidic the area around it is, thus allowing the contrast agent to detect it easier. They are hopeful that their research will change the way MRIs are conducted within the next seven years.

The contrast agent, gadolinium, is frequently used in patients who undergo MRI scans. This contrast agent has been linked to several side effects. If gadolinium was used while you underwent an MRI and you developed a serious side effect, please contact the gadolinium lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187 today.

Children and Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis

by Administrator 21. December 2011 04:18

The skin disorder known as nephrogenic systemic fibrosis, NSF, can affect people of all ages. This condition causes the skin on a person's body to thicken in areas including hands and feet.

People with kidney disorders are more susceptible to developing this disease. The contrast agent, gadolinium, is used in MRI scans and has been linked to the development of this disorder in patients suffering from kidney problems. The length of time that a person has been dealing with kidney problems does not matter in regards to this disorder.

Children with kidney problems can begin to show signs of this condition just like middle-aged adults.

If you or someone you know has NSF, you may be entitled to compensation. Please contact the gadolinium lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187 today.
