Dieting could further damage kidneys in overweight individuals

by Administrator 29. February 2012 07:51

A group of researchers gathered data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in regards to dieting and overweight individuals with kidney disease.  The survey consisted of 10,971 overweight Americans.

Diets high in protein could actually increase kidney problems in these overweight patients. These individuals are at a greater risk of developing chronic kidney disease, and therefore many of them choose to lose weight. It is important for them to understand the correct way to lose weight, in order to protect kidney function.

Overweight people should start losing weight by choosing diets low in protein and low in calorie. Incorporating daily exercise will also allow for the weight to come off in a way that does not alter the kidney's functions.

People with kidney disease are also at risk for developing side effects to the contrast agent, gadolinium. This contrast agent is used during MRIs, but for people with kidney disease, it may not leave the body properly, and therefore cause serious problems. If you have developed a side effect due to gadolinium, please contact the gadolinium lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187 today.

MRI scan can show autism signs at 6 months old

by Administrator 22. February 2012 06:43

An MRI method known as diffusion tensor imaging has been used successfully to connect signs of autism in high-risk children as early as six months old.

There were 92 infants that participated in the study. Each of these children were considered to be a high-risk candidate for developing autism characteristics, because at least one of their siblings already had autism. The children underwent the MRI scans at the age of six months old, and then their behaviors were assessed when they reached the age of 2.

The children who were determined to have developed autism were found to have had different brain functions at six months old, than the infants who did not develop all of the symptoms of autism. Researchers will still need to conduct several more studies, but these findings show that there can be preventative measures taken to improve outcomes.

The contrast agent, gadolinium, is commonly used in MRI scans. This contrast agent has been connected to severe side effects, including the development of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. If you underwent an MRI where gadolinium was used, and you developed a serious side effect, please contact the gadolinium lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187 today.

Researchers use MRIs to study batteries

by Administrator 15. February 2012 04:46

It is usually not a good idea to expose metal to magnetic resonance imaging systems, but a team of researchers from different universities across the world have joined forces to develop an understanding of several batteries.

This understanding is crucial to the development of future electronics and batteries that will be used in mobile phones, as well as automobiles. The radio waves in the MRI do not go through the battery, but they do scan the surface to an extent. These scans can be combined to recreate a digital version of the batteries, and to determine the lithium contribution.

The researchers were also able to figure out what the battery looks like before it is charged, and after it is charged. These images were three-dimensional, and revealed several areas that could be improved in order to create batteries that are cheaper and lighter, based on the information obtained from the study.

Gadolinium is a contrast agent that is commonly used in individuals who undergo an MRI. This contrast agent has been known to cause serious side effects in patients. If you underwent and MRI where gadolinium was present, and developed a serious side effect, please contact the gadolinium lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187 today.

Chauncey Billups undergoes an MRI

by Administrator 8. February 2012 07:15

The Los Angeles Clippers point guard, Chauncey Billups, has undergone an MRI in order to determine the extent of his injuries regarding his Achilles' tendon. The 35-year-old professional basketball player was playing against the Orlando Magic on Monday night when he fell victim to the injury.

The team is hopeful that the results will show that his Achilles' tendon is not, in fact, torn. If he were to tear it, then Billups would be out for the rest of the season, and this would create hardship for his basketball team. His teammates, as well as his coach, respect him and do not want to see his season end like this.

There are several players on the bench that are ready to fill in his position if necessary, and they will find out very soon if that will need to happen or not. The Clippers are also in a position to sign a free agent in order to help their team's depth for the rest of the NBA season.

Gadolinium is a contrast agent that is commonly used in MRI scans. This agent can cause serious side effects in patients. If you underwent an MRI where the contrast agent, gadolinium, was used and you subsequently developed a side effect, please contact the gadolinium lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187 today.

Study shows that women are not getting breast cancer MRIs

by Administrator 1. February 2012 06:28

Several reports throughout the years as well as the American Cancer Society have recommended that women who are at a high risk for breast cancer undergo an MRI once a year, in addition to their mammogram.

A recent study has shown that most women are not following through with that advice and are not receiving the MRI scans. It is unclear if doctors are not relaying the right information to their patients regarding these scans or if the women are blatantly ignoring their advice. What is known is the women who have an elevated risk of developing breast cancer are not utilizing the MRI scans as they should be.

According to the American Cancer Society, these scans are used to detect early signs of breast cancer and can have the ability to promote a better chance for recovery and survival of the disease.

The contrast agent, gadolinium, is commonly used in MRI scans and can have serious side effects if not removed from your body properly. Please contact the gadolinium lawyers of Williams Kherkher at 800-761-3187 if you or someone you know has developed a severe side effect after undergoing an MRI with the gadolinium agent.
