Understanding Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis

by Administrator 30. July 2010 07:28
Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis, formerly known as nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy, is a systemic disorder with its most prominent and visible effects in the skin.

Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis affects males and females in nearly equal numbers. Cases of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis have been confirmed in children and the elderly, but the condition tends to affect the middle-aged. Some degree of kidney disease is likely in people who suffer from Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis.

Over the past several years researchers have correlated the development of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis with the increasing use of gadolinium-based MRI contrast agents in patients with kidney disease.

Understanding Gadolinium

by Administrator 23. July 2010 03:47

Gadolinium is a chemical element with paramagnetic properties and is the most popular intravenous MRI contrasting agent.

As a free ion, gadolinium is highly toxic. It's use in MRI contrasting agents was considered safe as the agents are chleated compounds. However the toxicity of the element depends entirely on the strength of the chleating agent. The United States Food and Drug Administration approved gadolinium chleated contrast agents including Omniscan, Multihance, Magnevist, ProHance, Vasovist, Eovist, and Optimark.

According to a recent advisory from the American College of Radiology, Omniscan, Magnevist, and OptiMark are linked with a greater number of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis cases (NSF). NSF is an extremely rare, incurable skin condition.

Patients with kidney problems most hurt by gadolinium

by Administrator 16. July 2010 00:26

It is very common for doctors performing MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, tests to use gadolinium as a contrasting agent in patients.  The gadolinium creates a clearer image by contrasting a patient's blood vessels and surround tissues and organs.

Gadolinium is most commonly harmful to patients with kidney disease.  Kidney disease makes the kidneys less capable of cleaning blood, so it is very important that patients suffering from kidney problems receive dialysis after having an MRI test.

If gadolinium remains in a patients body for too long they can develop Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis, or Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy.  In NSF or NFD, skin thickens around the body's joints, which can often result in disfigurement and immobilization.

NSF Linked to Gadolinium

by Administrator 9. July 2010 05:53

Over the past several years, researchers have found a correlation between the development of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis and the increasing use of gadolinium-based MRI contrast agents.

Gadolinium, an element of the lanthanide series, is the chief component of virtually all contrast agents administered for magnetic resonance imaging. It has been linked to the development of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis, formerly known as Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy. Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis is a systemic disorder with its most visible effects on the skin. NSF patients experience swelling and tightening of the skin.

The skin changes may begin as reddened or darkened patches or papules. Patients may experience burning, itching, or severe sharp pains in areas of involvement.

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis, or NSF, and a gadolinium-based contrast agent used in an MRI scan may be to blame, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries and suffering. Boston Hospital Facing Gadolinium Lawsuit

by Administrator 2. July 2010 06:00

A woman in Boston is suing a hospital after she claims an MRI contrasting agent she was given put her at risk for the Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis she contracted.

According to the lawsuit, 70 year-old Silvia DeSilva contracted Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis from gadolinium after being given the MRI contrasting agent at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and Brighan Women's Hospital in Boston. Doctors administered the agent in 2007 in order to obtain better scan results.

According to her husband, 75 year-old Allan DeSilva, the doctors knew the risk of contracting her disfiguring, painful, and possibly fatal condition.

The disease is known to occur after individuals with impaired kidney functions are exposed to a gadolinium-based contrasting agent.
