ProHance

Gadoteridol, sold under the brand name ProHance, is an MRI contrast agent used to enhance images from MRI scans and help doctors view and diagnose internal problems. Gadoteridol is most commonly used in scans involving the central nervous system so that doctors can detect tumors or other medical issues.

ProHance contains the chemical gadolinium, which is potentially dangerous for certain patients. In most patients, once the MRI is complete, gadolinium is quickly and safely removed from the body after a few hours. However, patients with kidney malfunction, kidney failure, or renal problems may retain trace amounts of gadolinium in their systems. This exposure to gadolinium over an extended period of time can lead to serious health consequences and in some cases can even be fatal.

Gadoteridol and Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis

Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) is a serious disease caused by exposure to even trace amounts of gadolinium over a period of time. This condition causes the overproduction of hardened scar tissue, called fibrosis, which can cause hardening of the skin and organs and can eventually lead to organ failure.

A person who develops NSF may become confined to a wheelchair, or may face chronic problems that require regular hospitalization. Severe cases may even be life-threatening. If you or your loved one is preparing for an MRI, be sure to talk to your doctor about the possible serious side effects of gadolinium-containing agents such as ProHance and alert your physician if you or your family members have a history of kidney or renal problems.
