OptiMARK
OptiMARK, also known as Gadoversetamide, is a gadolinium-based contrast agent that is used to enhance images produced from a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. Prior to an MRI, the patient is given an injection of OptiMARK. This type of contrast agent is particularly useful for enhancing scans of the brain, liver, and spine. It increases a doctor's ability to detect lesions or tumors in these areas so that a patient can be appropriately diagnosed and treated.
Gadolinium Risks
While OptiMARK can be a useful product to improve images created during an MRI scan, the gadolinium in the contrast agent makes it a potentially risky product for some patients. Gadolinium is a metal element that can be toxic if it is not flushed from the body. Most people with healthy kidneys can quickly and easily flush the gadolinium from their system within a few hours. For people with kidney or renal problems, however, the gadolinium may not exit the body as it should and may instead persist in the patient's system.
Exposure and NSF
Exposure to even a small amount of gadolinium for an extended period of time can lead to Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF). This is a serious disease that causes fibrosis of the skin and internal organs. Fibrosis is the overproduction of tough scar tissue, which can cause the skin and organs to harden and may lead to organ failure. A person who develops NSF may become restricted to a wheelchair or may have to be regularly hospitalized. A severe and advanced case of NSF can be life-threatening and even life-ending.
If you or someone you love has developed NSF after being injected with OptiMARK for an MRI, your doctor or the contrast agent manufacturer may be responsible for your injuries and damages. A gadolinium lawyer can investigate the circumstances of your exposure to gadolinium to determine who may be held liable for your illness. You and your family may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages from time off of work, and pain and suffering.
