NSF and Children

Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF), formerly known as nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy (NFD), is a debilitating skin disorder that affects patients with kidney disorders. Patients with the disorder develop tightened, swelling, thickened skin, which can progress to the extent that the patient is unable to walk, fully extend their arms, legs, or fingers, or perform other normal functions.

Researchers have discovered a link between the NSF and the use of gadolinium-based contrast agents used when patients undergo an MRI. In patients without kidney problems, the contrast agents used in an MRI are safely flushed from the body after the procedure. However, in kidney patients, the gadolinium-based agent may remain in the body for an unsafe period of time, leading to NSF.

Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis in Children

NSF has been reported in all demographics of patients who have existing kidney problems, including in children. Although the condition is more prevalent in middle-aged adults, cases involving children have been reported. In addition, other cases have been reported to affect the elderly. Both males and females have been affected about equally.

The amount of time a person has been affected with a kidney disorder does not seem to have an effect on the likelihood of developing NSF. Neither does the root cause of the kidney disorder seem to be related to the likelihood of developing the condition. Some patients develop NSF after they have had a kidney disease for years, while others develop the condition even in the earliest stages of their kidney disease.
