Multihance

Multihance, also known as gadobenate dimeglumine, is a gadolinium-based contrast agent used during MRI scans to help improve image quality and display the location of lesions or tumors. Before an MRI, a patient is injected with Multihance or another similar contrast agent. These contrast agents are necessary during an MRI to help doctors diagnose and treat disorders. However, they also present a particularly hazardous risk to patients who have kidney or renal problems.

Risks of Gadolinium

Although Multihance is used successfully in many MRIs to help doctors diagnose conditions, the gadolinium contained in the contrast agent makes it potentially hazardous for some patients. Gadolinium can become toxic if it is not properly flushed from a patient's body after an MRI. The body of a person with healthy kidneys quickly removes the gadolinium within the first few hours after an MRI. However, those with kidney problems may retain some of the harmful element within their system. This can lead to a serious complication known as nephrogenic systemic fibrosis.

Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis

Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis, or NSF, is a serious condition that causes hardening of the skin and internal organs. This can lead to restricted movement in the body as well as organ failure, and can even be life-threatening. Currently there is no cure for the condition, only treatment to help slow or reverse some of the symptoms.
